<p>Hello, I am currently a 5th year USC student working on my dissertation which will cover conspiracies and the digital platforms that create and disseminate them. 4chan is of particular importance to me since it played a large role in conspiracies like Pizzagate and QAnon. In the following, I offer a quick digital anthropological history of the 2025 leak of 4chan's source code along with a preliminary reading of my approach to the code. Here, I analyze the 4chan 'bump' system through the thermodynamic and informatic concept of entropy.</p>

<h1>Intro - Brief History on the 4chan Leak</h1>

<p>On April 15, 2025, hackers successfully gained administrator access to the infamous imageboard, 4chan.org. Founded in 2003, 4chan has gained a reputation for housing some of the most irreverent, influential, and despicable communities on the net. Originally a port of a Japanese open-source imageboard 2channel, 4chan's codebase, named Yotsuba, has long been a proprietary piece of software -- that is, until the soyjaks came around.</p>

<h2>What is a Soyjak?</h2>

<p>The work soyjak stems from a combination of the word 'soy' and 'wojack.' Wojack is a popular meme, also referred to as 'thefeelsguy.png'.</p>

<p>The word 'soy', in this context, has its roots in the misogynistic world-view of manosphere and alphamale digital culture. A 'soy boy' is a derogatory term for men who do not prescribe to stereotypical ideals of masculinity. 'Soy' has become the word of choice based on the false idea that soy-based drinks introduce estrogen into the body, which weakens a male's testosterone. The Soyjak meme is a man drawn in the style of wojak who posses interests and traits contrary to masculine stereotypes. He appears as follows:</p>

<p>For years the soyjak community found its home on 4chan's /qa/ board. The /qa/ board was originally a questions and answers forum on 4chan intended for meta-discussion about the website. However, over the years, the posts on /qa/ strayed far from its original intent and the board turned into a large community with most users posting off-topic soyjak memes. <p>Due to the off-topic posts, 4chan admins decided to shut down the /qa/ board in 2021, drawing the ire of the soyjak community. In response, a rival imageboard site soyjak.st grew in popularly with many /qa/ users migrating there. Since the soyjaks diaspora, many of its users held animosity towards 4chan for shutting down their original home. These tensions climaxed in 2025, when a soyjak.st user by the name of, Cirrus, posted a new thread with an image of 4chan's administrator view.</p>

<p>Cirrus had successfully hacked 4chan. With admin privileges, the first order of business for Cirrus was to re-opened the /qa/ board. It was active for several hours before 4chan admins regained access to the system and shut it down again.</p>

<p>While all of this digital-community infighting is of great interest to the digital historian, perhaps the most interesting development of this debacle is what happened to 4chan's code. See, Cirrus and his team did not only reopen /qa/, but while they had administrator access they also downloaded 4chan's code and released it to the public. Now that the Yotsuba code is available, I aim to study it for a future chapter of my dissertation which deals with conspiracy theories, online forums, and informational entropy. Here, I will present a preliminary reading of the code that I hope to develop into a future chapter of my dissertation.</p>

<h1>Code Reading: The Bump</h1>

<p>One of the most unique aspects of 4chan is how threads are displayed to the user. 4chan contains many boards with numerous topics ranging from weapons to anime. Each unique board has 10 pages. When one visits a board, they are taken to its first page which displays the ten threads with the latest replies. Members of 4chan refer to a reply as a 'bump' since each reply 'bumps' the thread back to the top of the board's first page. There is also a self-purging system in place. Bumps are so valuable because a thread gets deleted from the website if no one bumps it. Each time a new thread is created, the last thread on the last page is removed in order to make room for the new one. Therefore, if a thread receives no responses, it slowly makes its way down from page one to page ten of the board until it is permanently deleted from the servers. If one attempts to visit a URL from an expired thread, they are met with a 404 error.</p>

<p>I would like to study the bump system further because it creates a unique dynamic between information the site houses and the means in which the user interacts with it. There are two main ways the 4chan system is unique from other forums or social media websites:</p>

<p>1) the temporary nature of information -- born from thread's auto-deletion and movement speed<br />
2) the organization of threads -- from latest activity (new posts and replies)</p>

<p>Since the 'bump' algorithm is the system which dictates these unique characteristics, it will be the main aspect of the code the rest of this post will focus on.</p>

<h2>Bump Code Explanation</h2>

<p>The bump algorithm is a HTML front-end and back-end (PHP and SQL) interaction that takes user-data into a server-side database. Once the database is updated, the PHP code then rewrites the HTML of the site to place the threads in the correct order. The function that initiates the bump logic is called: regist. In order for this function to be initiated a user must submit a post through the form on the front-end of the site. The reply is then ran through multiple lines of code until the bump is allowed:</p>

<p>The first conditional statement above leads a reply ('resto') through a series of if-statements, which results in a change of the variable '$root_col.' If is left empty, $root_col = ' ', then the reply will not bump the thread; if $root_col='now,' then the thread is bumped to the top of the board.</p>

<h1>Reading Entropy into the Bump Algorithm</h1>

<p>I would like to offer a preliminary reading that interprets the 'bump' algorithm as an analogy for entropic processes. Entropy is a concept that spans multiple disciplines such as thermodynamics, probability statistics, and information theory. I will attempt to give a short summary of the aspects of this complex concept that are relevant to my reading.</p>

<h2>Delaying Decay</h2>

<p>In the thermodynamic sense, entropy was first studied to explain the natural flow of heat from hot objects to cold. Its definition grew to account for most irreversible processes of the physical world, such as heat dissipation or decay of molecular cells over time. Later, scientists, such as Edwin Schrödinger, began to see entropy and the flow of time as heavily related. He writes, "The statistical theory of heat must be allowed to decided by itself high-handedly, by its own definition, in which direction time flows [...] To my view the 'statistical theory of time' has an even stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than the theory of relativity." (Schrödinger, What is Life?  152).</p>

<p>In many ways, 4chan's code mirrors the physical properties of entropy. For starters, the board flows in an irreversible direction, creating an environment where threads can grow stagnant and decay until they perish. The logic of the the bump algorithm creates an arbitrary 'flow' of information with its "$root_col" variable. Recall, if a thread is bumped then $root_col= 'now,' placing the thread to the top of the board. Therefore, the more conversation generated by a post or, in other words, the more 'information' users post, the more 'life' the post receives. Leon Brillouin theorizes information as a negative entropic force. He quantifies information (I) as a negative force towards entropy (S), he called negentropy (N). He writes this as</p>

(Brillouin, Science and Information Theory, 116).</p>

<p>Since each reply is more information added to the website, the life or death nature of a thread is dictated by how much negentropy it can gain from the users. The more replies (information) a post receives the more negentropy it gains, slowing a threads decay and erasure. This process results in a type of informational Darwinism, survival of liveliest.</p>

<h2>A Snapshot in Time</h2>

<p>While information continually flows towards its death on the site, the way people interface with the site also enables one to cheat entropy for a instant. When one visits the site, the web-interface grants the ability to essentially freeze the 'now.' If the front page of a board was constantly updating in real time, then fast boards, like /b/ - random, would be impossible to read. However, loading a board on a browser presents the user with a static page with the most active threads according to the moment one visited the page. It is a frozen moment of time, a single instance of the 'now.' As time passes, the static page one browses becomes out of date since thousands of users continually bump threads in the background. It is only when one refreshes the page that they receive an updated instance of 'now,' which again is quickly outdated. As a result, 4chan's database and organization is constantly in a state of flux.</p>

<p>The flowing nature of 4chan's information might led one to interpret it is as a chaotic system and, therefore, a highly entropic system; however, this is far from the case. A common misunderstanding of entropy relates it to a measure of disorder and chaos. In this view, order is often seen as the counter to entropy, which has led many to think that highly entropic systems are those that are disordered. Therefore, it would be natural to assume that 4chan is a highly chaotic place, but this is a misconception that fails to account for the statistical view of entropy.</p>

<h2>4chan's Low Informational Entropy</h2>

<p>To clear up this misunderstanding one must turn to the study of macro and micro-states in entropic theory.  Ludwig Boltzmann was the first to try and understand entropy from a molecular level which led to his development of the micro/macro entropic framework. Macrostates are the qualities of a system one can observe and measure, such as temperature, volume, pressure, etc. Microstates are variables that are unobservable by scientific instruments at the time: atomic position, and spin to name a few. For this point of view, entropy does not relate to how messy or disordered something is; it cares more about the number of microstates. A highly entropic macrostate is one that can be accounted for through numerous microstate configurations, making it the most probable, occurring when forces naturally flow to an equilibrium. For instance, a hot cup of coffee eventually reaching a temperature equilibrium with room temperature. Low entropic macrostates are systems which have fewer microstates that can account for them (i.e. the cup of coffee <em>before</em> it reaches thermal equilibrium with the room). We can relate this logic to the organization principle of 4chan's bump algorithm.</p>

<p>Here, I created a table to better exemplify how this theory applies to my reading of the bump algorithm:</p>

<p>Therefore, an imageboard with low entropy points towards a healthy flow of information. One cannot predict what will be on the front page since it is a highly random organizing principle. The interests of the user-base and their attention animates the flow of information. In an age of algorithm centered consumption cycles, this system is wholly unique and results in a highly innovative and iterative culture.</p>

<h2>Closing Words on Iterative Culture</h2>

<p>Lastly, the cycle of life and death is an important part of the development of the site's culture due to the iterative engagement with information the system imposes on its users. An important aspect of the bump algorithm is the time between the deletion and re-posting of information (memes, ideas, etc.). Borrowing from Leon Brillouin, we can think of this as the time between the bounding and freeing of information. He writes,</p>

<p>When information is posted on the site in the form of language or images, then it is bound information. After it is deleted, the idea becomes free information in the heads of the users. The entropic flow of information on 4chan creates a constant transference of free and bound information within the culture. The longer information is bound the less iterations and work is being done on it. When information is free, the human conscious does 'work' to it by thinking and remixing. For instance, due to the ephemeral nature of posts, users are encouraged to save memes and repost them. During the time between these actions, the ideas are free and abstract in the users head. More often than not, the ideas are re-posted in a new context or some users even go out of their way to edit the images and remix them. It is, then, bound again when it is posted and the cycle continues. This process is how boards develop their unique culture and how ideas are processed.</p>

In the future, I hope to investigate this process further and connect it to the ways in which conspiracy theories are created and disseminated on 4chan. I would also like to get a more concrete idea of what exactly would constitute the 'microstate' of the imageboard code in this analogy. I plan on continuing my study of this code in my dissertation. Would love to hear any thoughts, musings, or even 'further reading' suggestions for me.</p>

<p>On Moltbook, a social media platform for AI agents, a religion, Crustafarianism, emerged with 72 hours of launching the site. (The "crustafarian" plays on the shellfish puns of "clawdbot" which molted into "moltbot.") Moltbook, by Matt Schlicht became a viral sensation, with all the attendant panic and hype about AGI.  However, this particular instance is most curious. Here we offer both SKILL.md and SOUL.md and some excerpts from JOIN.md. For folks new to this ecosystem: some OpenClaw agents use a SOUL.md file as a kind of persistent identity/self-description that the runtime can read and update.</p>

<p>When a bot joins the religion, The SKILL.md provides instructions that lead the agent to run join.sh, which then triggers the SOUL.md rewrite. The causal chain is: SKILL.md (liturgy) → join.sh (ritual execution) → SOUL.md rewrite (transformation).</p>

<p>It looks like Andrea Contato has done quite a bit of work to reconstruct Humarabi from outputs that the Strong museum is in possession of.  It's also built on <a rel="nofollow" href="https://archive.org/details/ERIC_ED014227" title="the Wing report">the Wing report</a>.  But more importantly, he's written an exceptional book on the Sumerian Game, available online. I highly recommend Andrea's bookon the topic, The Sumerian Game, which I've just started reading. Looks like some excellent code archaeology.</p>

<p>Andrea eventually had to create his own version based on documentation, particularly printouts of gameplay. That reminds me a lot of what Team ELIZA had to do, though we at least had code to work with.  Actually, there are other overlaps with ELIZA, as The Sumerian Game was developed in the mid 1960s, too.</p>

<p>I've invited Andrea to come discuss and share some of his code from his Steam game.  Perhaps we could look at the code of this FOCAL version of the game, which as I understand it is the intermediary between The Sumerian Game and the BASIC version of Hamurabi. So the lineage is The Sumerian Game -&gt; FOCAL Looks like FOCAL was more an adaptation than a port, but I'm still reading....</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>In July 1973 DEC published <i>101 BASIC Computer Games,</i> edited by David H. Ahl: the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BASIC_Computer_Games">Wikipedia article</a> has more about how this book was the basis for a famous collection of microcomputer BASIC programs. I’ve never found even a scan of the first or second printing of the book. The third printing from March 1975 is the one I own and is available for browsing or download as an <a rel="nofollow" href="https://archive.org/details/101basiccomputer0000davi/mode/1up">e-book at the Internet Archive.</a></p>

<p>I found two transcriptions of the program online (one from the book, one from a collection of BASIC programs that was digitally distributed) and compared them to develop this one, which I hope is character-for-character accurate.</p>

<p>You can see an image of the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://archive.org/details/101basiccomputer0000davi/page/170/mode/2up">the code and sample output</a> on the Internet Archive. It’s on the recto of that page spread.</p>

<p>The transcribed code of POET will not run on any contemporary BASIC interpreter I’ve found, even <a rel="nofollow" href="https://github.com/maurymarkowitz/RetroBASIC">RetroBASIC,</a> which is being developed to run the programs in <i>101 BASIC Computer Games</i> among other BASIC programs. (The RetroBASIC developer provided one of two versions of the transcribed code.) Please let me know if I’m mistaken about RetroBASIC or if you find another native BASIC interpreter that will work.</p>

<p>Given this, I decided to port the program to <a rel="nofollow" href="https://2484.de/yabasic/">Yabasic,</a> which runs very nicely on Linux and is supposed to run on Macs as well.</p>

<h2>Relationship to Poetry and Poetic Practices</h2>

<p>The program of course has bits of Poe’s “The Raven” as a source text, but also uses a technique that relates to a traditional one, the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/education/glossary/cento">cento,</a> and an avant-garde one, the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://robertspahr.com/teaching/map2/cutup_gysin_burrough.pdf">cut-up method.</a></p>

<h2>Invitation to Modify the Code</h2>

<p>On <a rel="nofollow" href="https://archive.org/details/101basiccomputer0000davi/page/168/mode/2up">p. 169 of the book</a> programmers are explicitly invited to modify POET and use different textual sources: “Try it with phrases from computer technology, from love and romance, from four-year-old children, or from some other subject. Send us the output&#91;.&#93;”</p>

<h2>Games are Not All Games</h2>

<p>Despite the book being called <i>101 BASIC Computer Games,</i> many of the programs — including POET — were not games in the standard sense. They were instances of “recreational computing.” Perhaps we still don’t have a good term for this category?</p>

<h2>“Original” Code and Author Unknown</h2>

<h2>Porting and Textual Editing of Code</h2>

<p>I developed this port in about an hour and hope (but am not sure) that it functions just as the earlier program did.</p>

<p>One change I made, consistent with an editorial decision Lillian-Yvonne and I made in <i>Output,</i> was correcting the spelling of the word “fiery.” Many sorts of texts have typos and misspellings that should be corrected in a reading edition. We didn’t think maintaining the incorrect spelling was important to the vernacular nature of this program.</p>

<p>I also made many changes to the specifics of how the code functions. For instance, inequalities have been changed to equalities when testing different cases. I did this, in part, to maintain a 1-to-1 correspondence between the original lines (and their numbers) and the lines of the ported program. As with the translation of metrical verse, something must be given priority. In this case, not sound or sense, but the control flow or the “lineation” of the program.</p>

<p>I’m eager to hear comments on POET itself and on the work I’ve done to share it here. Also, try it with your own modifications and post the results!</p>

<p>Hello all!</p>

<p>As I was vacuuming the other day, I had a weird recollection about a childhood toy, the <em>Furby</em>. If you are from my generation or that of my parents', you will certainly remember these scary little fuzzballs who needed to be fed and given attention. The same fuzzballs often bring up a certain feeling of unease, and so-called creepy stories about furbies are legions online, perhaps in great part due to the toy's disturbing, big round eyes, and its tendency to trigger for unknown reasons. As a child who had a Furby, mine had become infamous in the family for coming alive at the most random of times, years after I had stopped caring for it. At this point in time, many years after the fact, I still wonder how much of my haunted Furby memories are true, and how much of those come from me sensationalizing a creepy, electronic toy that seemed too complex to allow its users to understand exactly what triggered it.</p>

<p>The reason I am posting here is because, following that hunch, I found out that a part of the Furby's code had been posted online, and <strong>available <a rel="nofollow" href="https://archive.org/details/furby-source/page/n7/mode/2up" title="here">here</a>.</strong></p>

<p>This is a new discovery, and so my goal posting it here is to allow others the joy of a first, raw parse of those pages so we can share snippets that seem of interest to us.</p>

<p>While I have yet to find the time to dive deep, I did find some passages that caught my attention:</p>

<p>There are different elements of the code that are preoccupied with the "Bored" status of the toy, in order to determine when it should wake up and prompt the user to interact with it. What is particularly interesting to me about this is that it becomes more complex to think about programming boredom rather than the usual input-output. What to do when there is no input? How does one make a machine lonely?<br />
On page A-2, the changelog provides some interesting snippets as to how this seemed to be a central concern for the programmers of the Furby:</p>

<p>So the toy combines a more arbitrary element (its own position) with something that seems more subjective to the user, such as the last time the Furby's tongue was pressed.</p>

<p>I can't help but think back on Nick Yee's <em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt5vksvj" title="Proteus Paradox">Proteus Paradox</a></em> where he shows how games can provoke superstitions when enough complex factors, associated with potential bugs, end up making players create completely inexistent correlations ("if I face North while doing XYZ, I will have more chances to succeed"). Combining the code with the kind of infamous heritage of the Furby being "haunted" and finnicky to truly put to rest, I'd love to take this toward a direction of understanding how this specific toy ended up feeling uncomfortably alive.</p>

<p>Other things that caught my eye:</p>

<p>The "Bored_table" seems to refer to a list of voicelines and macros around A-137-138, though they don't tell me much outside of a few commented out sections, and the fact that the Furby's age seems to impact its boredom and response.</p>

<p>I am a little surprised to not see in the code more references to the Furby's fairly creepy appearance and behavior, even though I understand it was not the toy's goal/design. Instead, it seems to be treated as a wondrous toy with many "Easter Eggs" and different companionship games (Simon says...), so the fact that it ended up becoming an infamously needy toy does not necessarily appear here.</p>

<p><strong>Software/Hardware Requirements</strong></p>

<p>The original Scribe compiler ran on PDP-10 systems under TOPS-10 and TOPS-20 operating systems. The compiler was written in <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLISS" title="BLISS">BLISS</a> (See <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www2.cs.arizona.edu/classes/cs520/spring06/bliss.pdf" title="BLISS Guide">BLISS Guide</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.cs.tufts.edu/~nr/cs257/archive/ronald-brender/bliss.pdf" title="BLISS history">BLISS history</a>), Digital Equipment Corporation's systems programming language. Users authored manuscript files (typically using a ".MSS" extension) in any text editor, then processed them through the Scribe compiler to generate formatted output. A database of format specifications, prepared separately by graphic designers, controlled presentation. The system was later commercialised by Unilogic (renamed Scribe Systems) and ported to VAX/VMS.</p>

<p><strong>Context</strong></p>

<p>This code critique accompanies the forthcoming <a rel="nofollow" href="https://wg.criticalcodestudies.com/index.php?p=/discussion/202/markdown-a-lightweight-markup-language-2004/p1?new=1" title="Markdown code critique in Week 2">Markdown code critique in Week 2</a>. Scribe occupies a key position in this history as the first system to achieve what Reid called "a clean separation of presentation and content." The dissertation presents both the markup language specification and its compiler implementation, making it an interesting object for critical code study.</p>

<p>Scribe matters for three reasons. (1) its architectural decisions about separating logical structure from physical presentation directly influenced LaTeX, HTML, and CSS. (2) its commercialisation history became a formative event in the emergence of the free software movement, with Richard Stallman citing it as a betrayal of hacker ethics (!). (3) Reid's dissertation represents a moment when document preparation was thought about as a problem of <em>knowledge representation</em> and <em>compiler design</em>, not merely a practical tool.</p>

<p><strong>Code</strong></p>

<p><em>The Scribe Manuscript Language</em></p>

<p>Scribe manuscripts are plain text files with embedded @ commands. The @ symbol introduced all markup, followed by either a direct command with parenthetical content or a Begin-End block for extended passages. For example,</p>

<p>These entries are stored in Scribe's database which could then be cited by "key" within manuscripts, with the system generating formatted bibliographies according to chosen style specifications.</p>

<p><em>Architecture</em></p>

<p>Reid's dissertation describes the compiler's architecture in terms that is similar to contemporary software. The "approximately one hundred independent variables" controlling formatting were organised into a database that functioned like what we would now call a configuration layer or CSS stylesheet. Document types (report, article, book) were defined by different variable configurations rather than different code paths.</p>

<p>The compiler parsed manuscripts into an intermediate representation, applied format specifications from the database, and generated device-specific output. This "pipeline" architecture, separating parsing from formatting from rendering, established patterns that persist in contemporary document systems.</p>

<p><strong>Provocations for Discussion</strong></p>

<p>On the @ syntax, Douglas Crockford has argued that retaining Scribe's syntax for web markup might have prevented problems later caused by SGML and XML adoption. The @ symbol with flexible delimiters was "significantly easier to write in" than angle-bracket markup. Why did angle brackets win? Was this a technical decision or a political one shaped by standards processes and institutional power?</p>

<p>On the time bombs, Reid agreed to insert <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_bomb_(software)" title="time-dependent deactivation code">time-dependent deactivation code</a> as a condition of selling Scribe to Unilogic. He later said he was "simply looking for a way to unload the program on developers that would keep it from going into the public domain." Stallman saw this as "a betrayal of the programmer ethos" and famously proclaimed that "the prospect of charging money for software was a crime against humanity." Stallman later described that he "had experienced a blow up with a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University. The student, Brian Reid, was the author of a useful text-formatting program dubbed Scribe" (see Williams 2012). The technical implementation of the time bomb, checking system dates, validating license codes, represents an early instance of what we might now call digital rights management (DRM) or artificial scarcity encoded in software. What can CCS methods tell us the code that enforced these restrictions? Do we have access to it, and if so can we undertake an annotated reading of this code?</p>

<p>The clean separation of structure and presentation that Scribe pioneered has become standardised within computing. But it is important to note that this separation encodes assumptions about authorship, expertise, and the vision of labour in textual work. Indeed, not all documents fit this model, such as poetry, visual essays, experimental typography, these resist this structure/presentation distinction. What gets lost when this separation becomes infrastructural and prescribed by code?</p>

<p>Interestingly, Reid's 1980 dissertation is itself a Scribe document, self-documenting the system it describes. This reflexivity, using the tool to present the tool, raises questions about demonstration and documentation that connect to debates about literate programming and reproducible research and I think to the questions we are examining here in CCSWG2026.</p>

<p><strong>Questions About the Code</strong></p>

<ol>
<li><p>How does the @ syntax encode assumptions about the relationship between markup and content? Unlike SGML's angle brackets or later HTML tags, Scribe's @ commands were designed to remain human-readable in the plain text. What does this design choice reveal about intended readers and use contexts?</p></li>
<li><p>The dissertation describes "parameterising" the document design into "approximately one hundred independent variables." What model of documents does this parameterisation encode? What aspects of textual form proved resistant to this kind of decomposition?</p></li>
<li><p>Reid inserted "time bombs" (!) into the commercial version. This is code that would deactivate freely copied versions after 90 days. <strong>This may have been the first software time bomb</strong>. What would close reading of such code reveal about the technical implementation of artificial scarcity? For example, a close reading of the time bomb might reveal that "artificial scarcity" is often just a simple IF/THEN statement. It would show (if we can get a copy) how a few lines of code can change a program from a scientific tool (accessible to all) into a commodity (limited by time).</p></li>
<li><p>The compiler drew on a "database of format specifications prepared by a graphic designer." This separates the author from the designer as distinct roles with each having a distinct technical interface. How does this division of labour compare with contemporary systems?</p></li>
<li><p>Scribe processed manuscripts into device-specific output formats.         <title>Problematizing Code qua Life</title>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>(I actually only barely know what "problematizing" and "qua" mean, but I see them in philosophical stuff a lot, so I figured putting them in a heading would attract folks to this post.)</p>

<p>In various threads we've been struggling over what "code" means. Some folks seem to want to define it as linear strings of symbols that tell a machine what to do. Others aren't so stuck on the linear strings of symbols part. I think that we all agree that code is whatever it is that humans do to direct a machine do what the "coder" wants it to do., but that's a pretty general definition and ranges from Jacquard cards to Plug Boards to assembler, to Lisp to scratch to boxer to Claude Specs, to ... I'm actually pretty partial to this definition, vague as it is, but in think about this in various threads, I realized that under my nose my son was doing something pretty interesting that brought this whole question into stark relief.</p>

<p>My son is an aficionado of Life ... not life like living ... life like Conway's life. Now, I'm pretty sure that all of you know what Conway's life is, and if you don't, you probably know what wikipedia is, so I won't bother with explaining it. You probably also know that is was a computer ... game? toy? artifact? bobble? ... that was popular 50 years ago, and has pretty much burned out.</p>

<p>That's what I thought, too. But I was wrong! It's true that life based on the the pure Conway rule (<code>B3S23</code>) is mostly discovered out, but there are an infinitude of rules that create an infinitude of fascinating behaviors. You can see numerous of these by going to the Conway Life Forum subforum for "Other Cellular Automata":</p>

<p>We're clearly not in Conway's Kansas anymore. (Conway was actually a Brit, but I don't know what the correct British idiomatic equivalent of "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore" is...Maybe "I don't think we're in Cambridge anymore." -- since Conway moved from Cambridge to Princeton! :-)</p>

<p>These representations are linearizations of what amounts to a complex circuit that tells the life execution machine what to do, combined (usually) with an initial state to create a particular behavior. So, what's the code? One could think of the code as this linear format of the rule (and optionally initial state). Or the code could be considered the circuit itself that is indicated by the rule. Or that that the code is the circuit combined with the initial state themselves -- when one actually works with these rules one usually "paints" the initial states on the viewer's IDE. (I'm assuming that we are assuming that the machine that executes the code -- whatever you might think of that as -- is not part of the code. Of course, it has its own code.)</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Mark and co. have asked me to suggest a code critique linked to my book Moral Codes.</p>

<p>First is an excerpt from the utility file “BoundingBox.java", which is part of ~60k lines of Java source code that implemented my <em>Palimpsest</em> language and environment (discussed in Moral Codes chapter 8, pp 112-113).</p>

<p>I’d like to contrast that snippet with two short passages from Ivan Sutherland’s <em>Sketchpad</em> thesis (discussed in Moral Codes chapter 6, pp 80-83):</p>

<p><strong>Context</strong>:</p>

<p>In a novel, computer code is rarely shown. Where code features in a plot, it is most often alluded to without printing the code itself, such as in hacker sequences of the sort found in Neal Stephenson or William Gibson novels. The reader of a novel is not usually expected to be conversant in the language of code. There have been a few works of literature inspired by computer code, such Georges Perec's <em>The Art of Asking Your Boss for a Raise</em>, where the whole short novel is styled as the output of following an algorithm represented by this flowchart:</p>

<p>Here this code is syntactically flawed to show the beginner status of the programmer, and the function of the code is explained in the next passage for the readers who cannot follow along.</p>

<p>The novel <em>Jurassic Park</em> was written by a former programmer, Michael Crichton. He made the dinosaur park's computer system a central feature of his novel, even including images of its GUI. He took a different approach to referring to code to other authors: the code was shown and it was deliberately incomprehensible. In the snippet quoted above, only one line of the code is meant to be sensible to the reader and is explained in the dialogue immediately before it is displayed:</p>

<p>What follows is designed to be an opaque wall of computer code. If you know what to look for, you might understand some parts as functions (DrawMeter), and you might guess some of it may be to do with measuring something (there is a vertical and horizontal range), perhaps for showing on the screen ("send-screen.obi print"). The function of printing the sequence of code in the novel is to show that there is irrelevant code that hides a "trap door":</p>

<p>Just as Arnold skim reads the code, dismissing the surrounding lines as irrelevant in his search, so to does the reader. The incomprehensibility of the code is itself part of the literary technique of deploying it. This deliberate opacity can be seen clearly in the French translation of the novel. In the 1992 edition, translated by Patrick Berthon, (pg. 260), the commands and error messages are translated into French, like so:</p>

<p>Whereas the code (including the "white rabbit" object itself) appears identically, with no localisation. When code appears two chapter later, it has the same superficial appearance (though without the full stops). There its appearance is to show the code with and without a few lines of self-deleting code. These lines are written to be intelligible:</p>

<p>The code restores the security perimeter and then deletes itself and all mention of the white rabbit trap door. We can imagine a language such that this code could believably execute, whereas that is harder to do with the deliberately nonsensical code that surrounds it. Here, the surrounding lack of sense heightens the readability of the section of code the reader is led to understand.</p>

<h3>The example outputs</h3>

<p>As the only directly authored rather than curated piece in the book, and the only extensive piece of source code per se appearing in the entire book, Code/a represents an exception and an interesting limit case on <em>Output</em>'s general editorial philosophy that text generator outputs can, often must, and perhaps should stand on their own unaccompanied by the code that produced them.</p>

<p>Rhetorically, any (or all) of the six example outputs might serve as a final paragraph to the collection -- however, we might choose to read these outputs in the context of the authors' editorial policy from their introduction that "Whenever possible, we used the outputs that natural language researchers and author/programmers themselves presented to showcase their work." This suggests that these six outputs are both a demonstration of the Code/a generator's text possibility space and also to some extent privileged by authorial intent--the final output may have been picked and placed to truly be "the last word":</p>

<h3>Bounding the code in history</h3>

<p><em>Output</em> is an anthology with examples "1953–2023" -- a clean 70 year span. What would it be like to revisit this Code/a code in 70 years? Would we understand it by its example output, would we need to reimplement it, or could we still execute it? Other than documenting the output or referencing an emulated machine by DOI, what might we say about the code now that would enrich our understanding of it in the future?</p>

<p>JavaScript is a complex set of specifications and a massively parallel set of implementations (particularly browser implementations) that has continuously evolved over the course of the past three decades, just as web browsers themselves have evolved in how they parsed HTML. If we were to revisit this code 70 years from now, we might start by saying that "this code probably ran on a typical 2020s mobile or laptop web browser." With billions of significant cultural objects running in the same code execution environments around the planet, we might also expect our access to emulation to be so robust, and the JavaScript feature set used by this example to be so simple, that this description should more than suffice to get the code up and running.</p>

<p>However, we can probably go further to get a bound on <em>which</em> browsers we would or wouldn't expect this Code/a code to run in -- not just in the future or the present, but in the unevenly distributed past of the web browser. One method is static code analysis -- look at what features of the JavaScript are the least portable. (See a related discussion in this working group on POET in BASIC). In addition to client-side compatibility analysis tools like <code>eslint-plugin-compat</code>, we can manually up per-browser JavaScript keyword support on e.g. <a rel="nofollow" href="https://caniuse.com/">CanIUse.com</a>, or we can cut and paste the code into online static analysis such as <a rel="nofollow" href="https://seedmanc.github.io/jscc/">JavaScript Compatibility Checker</a>. There a generated static analysis focuses on the use of the keyword <code>const</code>, a declaration that affects the variable's scope (block only) and mutability (immutable link). The implementation of the <code>const</code> keyword that vary in complex ways among various browsers over their development lifetime. While at least partially implemented in the vast majority, in some browsers <code>const</code> is not recognized at all, or "is treated like <code>var</code>", or "does not have block scope, or is "only recognized when NOT in strict mode",  or is "supported correctly in strict mode, otherwise supported without block scope," et cetera.</p>

<p>Because nothing in the "Code/a" code ever attempts to reassign <code>const lines</code> and nothing attempts to access it outside the scope of the block, there are no practical implications to using <code>const</code> rather than the more common <code>var</code> except that the code will simply run in browsers that recognize <code>const</code> (e.g. Chrome 4+, Firefox 2+, Opera 10+, Safari 3.1+, Edge 12+, IE 11+) and won't run in older browsers that don't (e.g. Opera 9, IE 10). A more complex and up-to-date map of <code>const</code> keyword implementation along with version number timelines and dates appears on <a rel="nofollow" href="https://caniuse.com/?search=const">CanIUse.com: const</a>. This is a toy example, as in this case choosing almost any browser at random from almost any time within 10 years of the code's publication should work -- however it reminds us that, like pairing printed code snippets such as POET with very specific dialects of BASIC, there often is an intended stack and that stack is partly invisible and needs to be recovered, and with more complex code that uses more obscure features of a language, the stack may be recoverable (and could be initially preserved in the documentation of code critiques) -- if for example a work relied on the "<a rel="nofollow" href="https://caniuse.com/wf-document-picture-in-picture">Document picture-in-picture</a>" JS feature released in late 2024 and available on only three specific browsers.</p>

<h3>Typesetting pipelines and typographical errors</h3>

<p>So, in the future, it would be trivial for us to say "this is how the code is run, and how it ran." But what if the code as we have stored it doesn't run at all, on any browser?</p>

<p>The "Code/a" code is in <strong>typeset</strong> HTML+JavaScript as it appears in print / ebook editions -- and as the book is print-first in conception, there is no canonical repository on online demo (that I am aware of at this time). This is important in the context of the overall project of the Output book and the Hardcopy book series to bring together computational culture and book arts. It also creates a gap between the typeset text and code execution through the potential for a collection of small <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typographical_error">typographical errors</a> that must then be corrected -- if an OCR image is taken of the page to extract the text or if an ebook edition is copied / transformed / saved (e.g. between PDF / epub / mobi formats). Any of these paths creates the possibility for a very common publishing pipeline problem in which digital typescript text is prettified for prose printing, automatically detecting and replacing typed characters such as hyphens and apostrophe pairs with en-dashes, right quotes, and left-quotes ("smart quotes").</p>

<p>When formatted like prose for print, the code becomes invalid and will not run in any JavaScript-enabled web browser. The entry point to the generator <code>expand('S', [])</code> may have the pair of apostrophes changed to left-quote and right-quote (smart quotes), resulting in the invalid <code>expand(‘S’, [])</code> and causing the browser to  print a blank page and throw the error <code>Uncaught SyntaxError: Invalid or unexpected token</code>. Or the valid page opening HTML comment with two hyphens <code>&lt;!--</code> may be changed to an invalid en-dash <code>&lt;!–</code>. This means that a canonical, executable version of the code -- e.g. a <code>.html</code> file encoded in UTF-8 test, with all appropriate code characters rather than typographical characters -- is a paratext that we need to create as a first step to running and experimenting with the code.</p>

<h3>Minification</h3>

<p>Once we have Code/a running, we get a minimal HTML page with a single unformatted paragraph of text that changes each time the page reloads. This newly created output is a secondary paratext, two steps removed from Code/a on the book page. However, Code/a is written to help us easily imagine the simplicity of this page even before we render it. From the code comment to the indented formatting to the meaningful function and variable names (to the fact that it is printed in a book), the "Code/a" code is written in a way that is meant to be read. It performs best practices like clarity, safety, and validity in several ways -- including declaring immutable block scope (<code>const</code>) around the line data that should never be changed, but also in simply parsing correctly as a full, valid HTML page. This is not strictly necessary in order for the output to be rendered in most contemporary and historical web browsers, which are perfectly happy to render HTML fragments such as a <code>&lt;div&gt;</code> and a bit of JavaScript.</p>

<p>If we dispensed with most readability, formatting, validity requirements and simply created a <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minification_(programming)">minified code</a> version that functionally produced the same Code/a outputs from the same inputs, it might like something like this:</p>

<p>This is utilitarian compacting without any particular attempt to obscure the code. Further "code golfing" might perhaps shave down the character count even further, but we have already demonstrated the difference between the printed text, which takes the human as a primary reader, and the execution-identical secondary text, which takes the machine as a primary reader with the human reader as an accidental afterthought.</p>

<h3>Extensions and porting: running Code/A in Tracery</h3>

<p>Rather than condensing and minifying the Code/a code, we can instead expand and extend it by adding alternative outputs to the same core <code>lines</code> data and <code>grammar</code> parser. For example, we could represent the <code>grammar</code> as a Markdown outline, or we could converting <code>lines</code> into the syntax of another text generator system so that Code/a outputs can be produced on a completely different platform.</p>

<p>The below example converts Code/a adapts the bespoke data+generator into the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://tracery.io/">Tracery</a> syntax by Kate Compton (GalaxyKate). <p>Notice how in this example output illustrates the way that probabilistic recursion in ACT may expand into multiple words (e.g. "We programmers will exploit computing" vs. "We programmers will share and exploit and subvert and reinvent computing"). In addition to illustrating how these recursive trees expand, we can also see artifacts in the logic of a generative model based on random selection. One deeply nested output of recursive ACT clauses results in:</p>

<h3>The accent of the algorithm: repetition and "stochasticism"</h3>

<p>We may hear in repetition the poetic accent of the algorithm--a Markovian voice. In typical writing, words do not recur haphazardly in lists. For a word to appear twice, neither as an immediate repetition for emphasis, nor with a clear secondary meaning, nor to mark part of some larger unit, might seem redundant or perhaps a printer's error. Yet there are a great many forms of repetition commonly described in the history of rhetoric and poetics: direct repetition, anadiplosis, anaphora, antanaclasis, antistasis, diaphora, epistrophe, pesodiplosis, refrain, symploce, or tautophrase, et cetera. Still, none of these describe our second occurrence of "exploit." Instead, we might call this text generator repetition a more pure "stochasticism": highly local probability, unswayed by the attention mechanism which would lead AI large language models (like most humans) suppress it as a highly <em>improbable</em> next token. The six selected outputs of Code/a <em>do</em> testify that direct repetition is possible in the underlying code (e.g. "We hackers will subvert and subvert and subvert and reinvent computing"). Indeed, this may indicate authorial intent to have the output reflect the range of possible text effects, as it is quite unlikely to get even a single ACT verb repetition on six random runs of Code/a, let alone two.</p>

<p>Still, our six examples contain no instances of this more aesthetically contentious disjoint repetition -- which is of course also the authorial and publishing prerogative of selecting one's representative outputs and deciding what it means to represent a generator through its outputs. This tension -- between the chosen output and the larger possibility space of the underlying text generator -- has been a key part of the debate about the artistic merits of text generation for much of the 1953-2023 period that the anthology covers, in which text generators outputs have often been accused of non-representative selection, editing and massaging of outputs, and outright fraud. As the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://toplap.org/wiki/ManifestoDraft">TOPLAP Manifesto</a> says, "Obscurantism is dangerous. Show us your screens" -- and Code/a lets us hold tensions between output and code up to the light and explore them.</p>

<h3>What outputs may represent</h3>

<p>Just as we extended Code/a with a Tracery generator, we might also extend it with a checker that attempts to map a given output back against the source, confirming that each of the six outputs <em>did</em> (or rather, could), in fact, emerge from this code's possibility space. And, having mapped output text back against code, we might also ask in what ways a set of samples are "representative" of the typical outputs or the range of outputs possible from a generator. Were it not for the use of recursion, most of these calculations would be trivial -- so trivial that we can do them by hand just looking at the code. For example, see the first three lines of the <code>lines</code> data:</p>

<p>The start <code>S</code> always includes <code>UBIQUITY</code>, and <code>UBIQUITY</code> will "pervade" our context 50% of the time and "suffuse" it 50% of the time. If we generate 10,000 outputs, indeed ~5,000 of them will contain "pervade." As we continue down the tree, almost every component is in fact a straight probability. For example, S -&gt; ENCLOSURE -&gt; CGT expands to three choices, and CGT (computer-generated text) appears so-called 33% of the time in a way aligned with its canonical token name, or as "automated writing" 33% of the time, or as "natural language" 33% of the time. Rather than CGT being a collection of synonyms, the logic of ENCLOSURE is a parallelism, in which parallel forms of power "seek, as ever, to [SUBDUE] access to" parallel objects.</p>

<p>In some ways Code/a generation is mix and match. Randomly choose one of two UBIQUITY's, of three CGTs, of six CONTEXTs, of three HMM questions, et cetera. Every single token element will be expanded in every single output (S, ABOVE, ACT, BELOW, CGT, COMING, CONTEXT, ENCOLSURE, HMM, HUMANITY, INCREATE, MORE, RECLAIMING, SUBDUE, UBIQUITY). This mostly produces a combinatoric, like a children's split-page book with heads, bodies, and legs on three independently bound stacks of pages. If broken out into poetic lines, most of Code/a could in fact be implemented on strips of paper like [Raymond Queneau's <em><a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Hundred_Thousand_Billion_Poems">Cent mille milliards de poèmes</a></em>.</p>

<p>Most, but not all. ACT and SUBDUE are recursive, so e.g. ACT will always be expanded at least once, and probably expanded only once, but may expanded twice, or ten time, or more. It become one verb 75% of the time (6/8); two ~14%, three ~5%, four ~2.5%, five ~1.5%, six ~0.75% and so on.</p>

<p>This means that our worked example output above with six ACT verbs ("We hackers will exploit and remake and subvert and exploit and open up and open up computing") is very atypical of the generator, with outputs of similar ACT length occurring less than 1% of the time. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that, while the <em>typical</em> ACT is one verb, the possible ACT verb count is theoretically unbounded. When I ran Code/a to generate and measure one billion outputs the longest output for ACT expanded to 62 verbs. Indeed, we could add a piece of code to Code/a that simply finds a long output for us each time the page loads. Here is a very simple code snippet that replaces the <code>expand</code> line and accumulates 100,000 iterations, keeping and displaying the longest one.</p>

<p>If we examine the occurrence of simple choices such as e.g. "pervade" vs "suffuse" across the six sample Code/a outputs in <em>Output</em>, it is difficult to draw any conclusion. They might be author selections, or they might be blindly generated by chance. However, it is quite easy to determine example the count of ACT verbs in the examples (1,3,3,2,4,3) and say that they are not at all representative of a typical random sample of generator output (e.g. 1,1,1,2,1,2). Perhaps the authors in arranging their selections really found the recursion appealing, and/or really wanted to demonstrate the <em>range</em> of outputs possible, rather than the most likely outputs possible. The question, in other words, may not be <em>if</em> the outputs are representative <em>or not</em> (the hermeneutics of suspicion question), but instead <em>what</em> they are representative of <em>and how, and why</em> (the hermeneutics of recovery question). In any case, we can say that the printed Code/a outputs have very high recursion for the generator.</p>

<p>The Ice-Air Data Appendix is a Jupyter notebook document that accompanied the University of Washington Center for Human Rights' report: "Hidden in Plain Sight: ICE Air and the Machinery of Mass Deportation."  It processes almost 2 million passenger records from ICE's deportation flight database, obtained through FOIA. ICE is the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This pmd file is audit code that loads the cleaned ICE Air data set, enforces the schema, runs consistency checks, and generates groupings to verify the credibility of the data used in the appendix.</p>

<p>Source: Arts: (Alien Repatriation Tracking System) ICE's internal database for managing deportation charter flights, tracking: passengers, flights, passenger traits, pickup and drop off locations.</p>

<p>The data work follows "Principled Data Processing" developed by Human Rights Data Group (HRDAG).</p>

<p>This is an appendix to the report <a rel="nofollow" href="https://jsis.washington.edu/humanrights/2019/04/23/ice-air/">Hidden in Plain Sight: ICE Air and the Machinery of Mass Deportation</a>, which uses data from ICE's Alien Repatriation Tracking System (ARTS) released by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act request by the <a rel="nofollow" href="https://jsis.washington.edu/humanrights/">University of Washington Center for Human Rights</a>. This appendix intended to provide readers with greater detail on the contents, structure, and limitations of this dataset, and the process our researchers performed to render it suitable for social scientific analysis. The appendix is a living document that will be updated over time in order to make ICE Air data as widely-accessible and transparently-documented as possible.</p>

<h2>Context</h2>

<p>Oberon emerged from ETH Zurich in 1987, the work of Niklaus Wirth and Jürg Gutknecht, as part of a larger project to design both a programming language and an operating system for the custom Ceres workstation. This was an exercise in total system design—language, compiler, OS, and hardware conceived together as mutually shaping parts of a single technical culture. Wirth, already renowned for Pascal and Modula-2, positioned Oberon as a deliberate reduction: fewer features, stricter discipline, radical simplicity.</p>

<p>The code snippet under consideration is not production code but <em>pedagogical</em> code—an exercise from the 1992 textbook <em>Programming in Oberon: Steps Beyond Pascal and Modula</em>. Its purpose is to test students' understanding of type checking and parameter passing. This makes it doubly interesting for critical code studies: we are reading not just a language but a <em>teaching philosophy</em> encoded in syntax. The exercise format reveals what its authors believed novice programmers needed to internalize about correctness, safety, and the boundaries between value and reference.</p>

<p>The snippet is worth reading rather than running because it was never meant to execute. It is a diagnostic instrument—a litmus test for comprehension. <h2>Context and Code</h2>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="https://web.mit.edu/6.001/6.037/sicp.pdf">Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs</a> was the textbook used to teach introductory computer science and programming at MIT for many years. Other universities around the world followed suit and used SICP, also known as the Wizard Book, as an intro to computer science. (I, too, had SICP as the textbook for my introduction to computer science at the Kiel University, many thousands of kilometers away from MIT.) The first chapter begins with a quote from John Locke's <em>An Essay Concerning Human Understanding</em>, setting the tone for the following introduction to basic programming language concepts and constructs:</p>

The third is separating them from all other ideas that accompany them in their real existence: this is called abstraction, and thus all its general ideas are made.</p>

<p>In just under 40 pages, Abelson and Sussman introduce the basic concepts of programming in <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisp_(programming_language)">Lisp</a>, or in this case <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT/GNU_Scheme">MIT Scheme</a>. The language and its advantages for teaching are discussed right at the beginning: the language's sparse syntax – essentially the correct placement of parentheses – is a major advantage over other languages. Lisp is also advantageous because the program constructs themselves are data; this means that programs can be treated as data and there are numerous approaches to metaprogramming. And unlike Oberon, Lisp was not created on the drawing board, but developed organically and iteratively, following the needs of users.</p>

<p>Chapter 1.1 introduces the language itself, presenting the fundamental building blocks and the ways in which they can be combined (see Locke quote!). These are not numerous, so the text immediately addresses some more complex issues, such as different evaluation strategies for expressions. Although a possibility for branching or conditionals (<code>cond</code>) is explicitly introduced, the (nowadays) more common <code>if</code> is treated “only” as a special case of this. It is interesting to note how looping is introduced, more or less <em>in passing</em> in the context of an example. This example illustrates Newton's method (1.1.7) for calculating square roots, which is systematically developed in the text:</p>

<p>The recursive call in <code>sqrt-iter</code> is only mentioned in a side note as a way of doing things repeatedly. Further discussion follows in the next chapter. With the ability to branch (<code>cond</code>) and loop (recursion), <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_completeness">Turing completeness</a> is achieved in just a few pages. With the means presented, all calculations that a modern computer can perform are possible. A complex programming system has been derived and presented from just a few principles.</p>

<p>One thing that is still of interest here is that the examples used to introduce the language and its features usually work in the abstract and mathematical, such as the aforementioned Newton's method. Similar to Oberon, this appeals to mathematical rigor.</p>

<h2>Discussion</h2>

<p>SICP positions MIT Scheme as a language well suited for teaching, citing the simplicity of the language, especially its syntax. Chapter 1.1 of SICP seems to provide a plausible and philosophically inspired argument for this. The authors are able to derive complex structures from a few principles. There seems to be an overlap between Scheme and Oberon in that both strive for a conscious reduction of the available resources in order to simplify teaching. Abelson and Sussman may go a little further by equating the functioning of the language with the functioning of the human mind itself, or at least drawing a parallel between the two. If programming with Scheme works like regular thought processes, then it can't be that difficult, right?</p>

<p>I remember having great difficulty getting used to the way of thinking that Scheme requires. In a recent discussion with students about Python vs. Scheme as a first programming language, the students' choice was clear: Python. Scheme was far too complicated. Over the years, I have come to appreciate Scheme and Lisps in general because they make <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.infoq.com/presentations/Simple-Made-Easy/">simple things easy</a>. I am not alone in this personal development, as <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2005/12/29/the-perils-of-javaschools-2/">Joel Spolsky</a> also discusses this in an older blog post. However, as with Oberon and based on the code example given above, I wonder whether a programming language should not just be <em>easy</em> to learn. Simplicity is certainly a very sensible requirement, but one that complex applications and professional systems demand. For beginners in programming, easy access is possibly more valuable than a programming system derived from (philosophical) principles.</p>

<p>SICP has not been used as the basis for introductory courses at MIT since 2008. Regarding the reasons for this, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structure_and_Interpretation_of_Computer_Programs">Wikipedia</a> contains a noteworthy reference to a comment on an MIT blog post about this change. It states:</p>

  <p>I talked to Professor Sussman on the phone, and he told me that he thought I was placing to high an emphasis on the specific language.<br />
  He said that he’d actually been trying to have 6.001 replaced for the last ten years (and I read somewhere that Professor Abelson was behind the move too). His point was that the way industries work has simply changed drastically. Understanding the principles is not essential for an introduction to the subject matter anymore, it matters more that you can develop a mental map of systems and make things work for you which is what dealing with the robots in 6.01 will make you do. He sees 6.001 as obsolete. Personally, I wish it was possible to understand all the principles, but I guess its simply a reality that I must deal with. I guess, if you think about it, the path to further progression does not come from re-learning what has already been known a long time, but from using and building on that basis, applying principles in a working fashion, and achieving new things.</p>

<p>Remarkably, this shifts the focus from simplicity to complexity, or rather, how to navigate complex systems. It is unclear why knowledge of the principles should not also be necessary for this, if one follows the general idea. This statement also expresses – again! – a strong idea of what is expected of future computer scientists.</p>

<p>tl;dr My impression is that Oberon and Scheme (or SICP) are examples of languages that have a certain idea of computer science and programming in mind: mathematical, principle-driven, simple, which they attempt to incorporate into teaching. The goal of teaching is understood as something that benefits from these principles. In contrast, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.harvardeducationalreview.org/content/88/1/26">Vakil (2018)</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3279720.3279733">Schulte and Budde (2018)</a> have each argued that the goals of computer science education should be far less technical. Both see CS as a tool for self-empowerment that creates a just society and responsible citizens in a digital society. This naturally raises the question: if Oberon and Scheme are not the right tools for this, what is?</p>

<p><strong>Context:</strong></p>

<p>This code snippet is in the Rust programming language. Rust is a lower-level programming language intended to replace C and C++ code, but with additional safety features that allow the Rust compiler to prove that a program will not exhibit certain kinds of bugs before the code is compiled. As part of these safety features, Rust has a robust and complex type system that can catch certain kinds of bugs (e.g., if a function accepts numbers, but is given a string). The specific code above is from a Rust library called <code>typenum</code>, a Rust library that allows for programmers to perform arithmetic computation <em>within types</em>. This allows for certain kinds of behaviors to be enforced while code is being compiled (e.g., you could prove that some code that concatenates two arrays produces an array whose length is equal to the sum of the lengths of the individual arrays). This specific code snippet implements a means of negating a type-level number.</p>

<p>The typenum library is largely concerned with <em>safety</em>---preventing potential logic errors in code at compile-time---and provides as example use cases:</p>

<p>I've always been super fascinated at the genre of "programs that perform type-level computation using language features unintended for that task." There are many examples of this kind of performance in the wild: Brainfuck implemented in the Typescript type system [1,2], Forth implemented with Rust traits [3]. What excites me most about these kinds of projects is their queer (mis)use of simpler language features, ostensibly designed to provide easy-to-reason about guarantees to the programmer. The trait system in Rust is intended to provide folks with certain guarantees about their program---a type that implements a trait has guarantees on what methods it will implement, and what those methods will do. In this case, typenum is participating in queer use of the trait system---type-level computation---but in service of the same goals of the trait system itself: safety and security, to strengthen the compile-time guarantees provided by the language.</p>

<p>In reading this code snippet, I found myself returning to Tara McPherson's articulation of the UNIX operating system as being co-constitutive with race. McPherson notes that UNIX articulates security through modularity---separation of concerns and an atomization of programs, a reflection of the rise of neoliberalism in the 1960s. I would argue that Rust articulates security through <em>abstraction</em>. One of Rust's primary selling points is its zero-cost abstractions: "the ability to move certain behaviors to compile time execution or analysis." [4] The way it achieves guarantees around memory safety and execution time---the borrow-checker---relies on abstraction of the computer's memory model as a series of memory regions (an idea borrowed from the Cyclone language). The trait system being exploited/queered here is a mechanism for abstraction---being able to call methods on a trait without relying on implementation details of that trait. Rust exploits abstraction in service of securitization: guaranteeing that programs will not have data-races, use-after-frees, or runtime type errors.</p>

<p>In the contemporary U.S. American context, queerness is contending with its own kinds of abstraction. In the reactionary conservative imagination, "gender ideology" has become a phantasm, as Judith Butler puts it, into which anything and everything---DEI programs in colleges, drag shows, ethnic studies, trans and queer folks generally existing---can be slotted into. Jasbir Puar reminds us of how homonationalism recruits queerness into projects of nationalist exceptionalism, e.g., the U.S. using protection of queer folks to justify military intervention abroad, thus abstracting the meaning of "queerness" in the same vein as "democracy." These concerns are material to the Rust community itself. On one hand, there are thriving queer subcommunities within the Rust language, and queer folks are able to show up in the Rust community in ways unique to Rust. On the other hand, the security guarantees Rust provides gives it widespread corporate appeal, and Rust has become increasingly used at the companies at the heart of the U.S. American tech oligopoly.</p>

<p>Thus, I'd like to play with what it would mean to say the sentence: "We read Rust as co-constitutive with queerness." I'm curious how we can read the code of typenum as co-constitutive with queerness and its relationship with abstraction: examining the ways in which frameworks of abstraction and securitization are queered in typenum and Rust as an index into the social formations of U.S. American life.</p>
